We’ve been in this exciting new decade for about a week now and at this point you might be getting sick of all the “New Year” posts. Well, I’m not!! My #type3enneagram self is buzzing. I feel so fresh, invigorated, and alive with the possibilities that the new year brings. However, I know that this is not the case for everyone. With all the “New Year, New Me” energy, your friends promoting their new diets, and the overwhelming amount of resolutions, it can all just feel like a lot. As much as I love goal-setting and to-do lists, I no longer feel like long traditional lists of resolutions are the best fit for me.
High school (and even college) Liv is dropping dead at that statement I just made. I used to be obsessed with making new year’s resolutions and had a whole, complex, annual system down. As I grew older, my responsibilities intensified and I realized that my resolutions often gave me more stress than success. So, I became much more deliberate and way less excited when making them. Although it is very freeing to not feel the pressure of changing my whole life every January, part of me still misses the comforting ritual of hardcore New Year’s resolutions.
Last year, instead of making a resolution I chose a word as a theme of the year. I loved it. Instead of feeling like a deadline or chore, it felt more like my North Star, guiding me all year long. This year, I wanted to take the idea of a one-word theme and break it down a bit more. In 2020, I have a word to guide me through each season:
These four themes will guide my year and kick off the decade right! I have so many fun things planned for each quarter and I want to share this journey with you as well. Please feel free to borrow these four themes to guide your own year, follow along with me, and give them your own fresh meaning and spin, or come up with your own themes! I’m saying goodbye to stressful “resolutions” and instead I’m basically turning 2020 into a bunch of themed parties. And the party ain’t gonna stop!
So, grab some champagne, sparkling juice, or your drink of choice and let’s dive in!
What does it mean to show up? It means being present no matter how messy it may feel. It means doing the dang thing no matter how uncomfortable or scary it may be. It means that you’re no longer a spectator in life, but you’re grabbing it right by the horns! It means giving things another try. It means to live in the moment.
I love the phrase “show up” because it is full of so much grace, dedication, flexibility, and bravery. All you gotta do is show up. Just a little bit today and then a little bit more tomorrow, and the day after that.
For me, I’ll be showing up in my marriage by launching my 52 Moments campaign in order to commit to being present in my marriage. Maybe for you, it looks like showing up in your business, in your finances, in your motherhood, or in your health.
Whatever you choose to show up in, please remember that you don’t have to show up as your perfect self, only your true self. Be patient and loving to yourself. Know that you will make mistakes and mess up, but you’ll show up again the next day anyways.
These themes are not new year’s resolutions that get forgotten about by the end of January. They are a way to start off the year on the right foot and to live intentionally. It’s not meant to change you, but rather change the way you interact with the world around you. So let’s start with this baby step. Let’s start showing up and kicking butt!
Some days it’s gonna be harder than others, but I know I can do anything and I believe that you can too. Let’s do the dang thing! 2020 is our year and we are going to show up for it!
