You know what they say…there’s a first time for everything. Well, this was the first time I’ve ever literally gotten ants in my pants on a photoshoot. And if I had the chance to do it all again I would say, “heck yes!!”
Matt and Grace are funny, outdoorsy, kind, and animal-lovers. I knew I liked them the second they told me their wedding hashtag is #fellowshipofthediamondring. I liked them even more when I met sweet their puppies, Mustang (a Pitbull) and Berkley (an Aussie). Without Matt and Grace’s (and their pups’) spirit of adventure these breath-taking photos would not be the same.
Stoney Creek Metropark in August is one of the most beautiful places around. The wildflowers are in full bloom, the sunsets are magical, and it is so vibrantly full of the last legs of summer. When we hopped out of our cars and saw this giant field of goldenrods, I knew it was going to be a stunning backdrop with Grace’s golden hair. After taking a few photos on the edge of the field, I hesitantly asked if they would be willing to trek into the tall grass and flowers for some more photos. There was absolutely no hesitation on their part and I knew we were in for a great shoot.
After a few minutes of capturing gorgeous photos in the goldenrod field, we moved on from the spot and went in search of a new location. Being a photographer in metro-Detroit for a decade, I know almost every corner and path of this park. However, we stumbled upon one trailhead that I had never been down before. Knowing that Matt and Grace are the outdoorsy type, I figured they’d be down for a bit of an adventure. Next thing I knew we were trekking into another field, this time with shoulder heigh wildflowers….and thaaaat’s how I got ants down my pants. Regardless of the uncomfortable sensation of being a walking movie set for “A Bug’s Life”, these photos were so so worth it.
I have done nearly a dozen engagement sessions at Stoney Creek this summer and none of them look quite like this. Matt and Grace were willing to go the extra mile (quite literally. Ha.) for their session and I absolutely love when clients are bold and adventurous. Going that extra step into a potentially ant-filled trail is what creates those memorable photos that are unlike anyone else’s!
Matt and Grace, congratulations on your engagement! I cannot wait to photograph your wedding and see where life takes you.
